Understanding Contributions to NAMHP
What is a 501(c)(6) organization
The National Alliance of Mental Health Providers (NAMHP) is designated as a 501(c)(6) organization. Unlike charities classified as 501(c)(3), which focus on public charitable activities, a 501(c)(6) organization is a business league that promotes the common interests of its members. NAMHP primarily engages in advocacy, lobbying, education, and professional support for mental health providers.

Why NAMHP is a 501(c)(6)—and Why That Matters for Our Advocacy
The National Alliance of Mental Health Providers (NAMHP) is structured as a 501(c)(6) organization, which is a business league designation under the IRS code. This status was intentionally chosen because it allows us to engage in robust lobbying and advocacy efforts—without the restrictions placed on 501(c)(3) charitable organizations.
While 501(c)(3) nonprofits can only engage in limited lobbying, 501(c)(6) organizations like NAMHP are free to actively advocate for legislative and policy changes that benefit our members.
This includes:
-
Fighting for fair insurance reimbursement rates
-
Challenging exploitative practices by venture-capital-backed platforms
-
Pushing for mental health parity and systemic reform
-
Engaging directly with lawmakers and regulators to ensure providers’ voices are heard
Our mission is to advance the collective business and professional interests of mental health providers. As a 501(c)(6), NAMHP is empowered to do just that—without being silenced by the lobbying limits that apply to charitable organizations.
While donations to NAMHP are not tax-deductible as charitable gifts, they are a strategic investment in protecting your profession, your autonomy, and your future as a mental health provider.
Key Considerations for Donations
1. Tax Deductibility:
-
Donations to a 501(c)(6) organization are not tax-deductible as charitable contributions. However, businesses may be able to deduct their contributions as a business expense if they are directly related to their trade or profession.
-
Always consult with a tax professional to determine if your contribution qualifies as a deductible business expense.
